Any Given Sunday (15)
Running Time: 150 minutes
CAST
Al Pacino,Cameron Diaz,Dennis Quaid,James Woods,Jamie Foxx
DIRECTED
Oliver Stone
Well Stone has gone straight for a plain old American Football game where the coach (Al Pacino) wants one more last shot at it.
FOr the whole film it makes these Footballers sound like Gladitors (you won't be amazed to read that screenwriter John Logan also worked on 'Gladiator' the up and coming movie). For the whole of the 150 minutes it throws images, noises and things you have never seen before, this portraying the athletes like heros.
Al Pacino is Al Pacin... er, Tony D'Amato, head of an underachieving gridiron team, the Miami Sharks. When he loses two quarterbacks (you know, the guys who throw the ball to other people to try and get touchdowns) in a game, he has to turn to rookie Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx).
Beamen quickly becomes the star attraction, revitalising the side but alienating his teammates with his 'me, me, me' approach. Looking on disapprovingly is veteran quarterback Jack 'Cap' Rooney', who's putting his life on the line every time he plays.
As well as the ferocious on-field spectacle, there's also an exploration of the shameless commercialisation of the modern game, with Cameron Diaz excelling as the ruthless owner of the team.
Stone's relentless style won't be to all tastes, and at two and a half hours the padding's not restricted to the players' uniforms, but minor quibbles aside, 'Any Given Sunday' is an irresistible boys' own saga.
