The Insider (15)
Running Time: 155 minutes
CAST
Al Pacino, Russell Crowe
DIRECTED
Michael Mann
The Insider is a real life story of two men facing moral problems involving their employers. One man sacrifices his job, his family, his safety and his reputation. The other man gets sent to the Bahamas when he rankles his bosses.
The first guy, Dr. Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe), is a scientist in a tobacco company, while the other guy, Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino), is a producer for "60 Minutes'. Bergman's moral crisis is more rejectable than Wigand's.
Director Michael Mann (Heat) begins his stories in 1995 as Wigand is being done in by Brown & Williamson, the countrys third-largest cigarette maker, and while doing that Bergman is arranging an interview between Wallace (Christopher Plummer) and a Hezbollah leader .
Bergman receives some tobacco-industry documents and needs a translator, which is how he meets Wigand. Bergman soon senses Wigand knows far more than he's telling, the producer encourages wgand to turn his back on the cigarette makers, in spite of illegal doings and denials before Congress, and have long known about the dangers of their product.
In the movie's second half, the conflict shifts to Bergman's battles within CBS to get Wigand's interview to TV. Under threats of a billion-dollar lawsuit, CBS' lawyers opt out to hold Wigand's interview a decision backed up by "60 Minutes' executive producer Don Hewitt (Philip Baker Hall).
In the end it is a typical Al Pacino stiry i.e. gangsters and Wigand wins it in the end with his couragwe to own up.
