After a list of romantic comedies, Julia Roberts is back to her 'Pretty Woman' best in this real-life drama.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh ('Out Of Sight', 'The Limey'), it's the David and Goliath tale of a twice-divorced mother of three little ones who takes on one of America's biggest corporations with a new wave of girl power - and wins.
Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is having a really bad life as it starts out. Returning to her car after a disastrous job interview, she finds a parking fine on the front window of her car and damages a touch of femininity. Before you know it she is rear-guarded by a dangerous driver.
In court, though, Erin's attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) fails to land any kind of ruling, this leading the way for the film. Erin gets her revenge by dropping in to his office and demanding she gets a job. Reluctantly, Ed obliges to this outrageous demand.
Erin's forthright attitude and revealing outfits but this time without the 'Pretty Woman' business wins herself a few friends in Masry's law firm - until, that is, she finds some medical records which point to a huge cover-up involving contaminated water and its devastating impact on a small community.
Erin's neglect of her children and biker boyfriend Aaron Eckhart giving rise to some genuinely moving scenes, helping to change the atmosphere of the film helping it to get a wide audience.
Finney is splendid as the shabby yet noble Ed, while Peter Coyote is impressive as the big city lawyer who takes over the case, much to Erins annoyance decides to take brief appearance as a kindly waitress.
In the end, though, this is Roberts's film. Recieving all the sensistivity that she deserves after a long while in the dark.
